PALM COAST , FLORIDA
Palm Coast is located between Daytona Beach and St. Augustine in eastern Flagler County. Situated along the Atlantic Ocean, it is known for its calming scenery of fresh and saltwater canals and colorful native foliage. The city is 65 miles south of Jacksonville and 82 miles north of Orlando by car, and I-95 is easily accessible. In this small city next to the sea, residents spend their free time engaging in outdoor recreational activities or just relaxing. Boating, walking, jogging, tennis and golf are all popular. Day trips may include visits to Daytona Beach, Marineland, DeLeon Springs, the charming town of Mt. Dora, or historic St. Augustine. Palm Coast was originally established as the Palm Coast Service District in the late 1960s and incorporated as Palm Coast in 1999. Although Palm Coast is relatively young, the city does provide a wide range of services to its approximately 60,000 residents, including development, fire and police protection, road maintenance and parks and recreation management. Despite Palm Coast’s relaxed atmosphere, the city is home to more than 30 mid-sized and large businesses. Public school students are served by Flagler County School District, which runs three elementary schools, two middle schools and two high schools in Palm Coast. There are also private schools within Palm Coast and the Daytona Beach Community College is nearby. Palm Coast real estate is affordable, with plenty of condominiums, townhouses, single-family homes, duplexes and undeveloped land available.
REAL ESTATE
The Palm Coast residential real estate market is thriving. There are condominiums, townhouses, single-family detached homes and undeveloped lots available for purchase. The city offers a variety of options for buyers, with prices ranging from the high $100,000s for modest houses to $1 million and more for large estate properties and luxury executive homes. The vast majority of residential properties available are single-family detached homes in the range of the high $100,000s to $400,000. Because of the city’s location, many of the properties offer water frontage or views of the water or other scenic landscapes. One can choose from many three-bedroom homes in the $200,000s in neighborhoods such as Pine Lakes and Quail Hollow. Larger homes, like those in Palm Harbor and Grand Haven villages were built in the mid to late 1990s and start in the high $200,000s. Expansive, sweeping properties in exclusive neighborhoods such as the Island Estates are priced in the millions. Many of the available condominiums and townhouses are large, waterfront units, priced in the mid-$400,000s. Undeveloped land and lots are available for custom building. New two-story condominium developments start in the high $100,000s for one-bedroom units.
MORE
The land now known as Palm Coast was originally owned and developed by ITT Corporation. The original development plan included 48,000 homes on about 65.6 square miles. The region includes 23 miles of saltwater canals and twice as many freshwater canals. Palm Coast is well-known for these many waterways, which add a great deal of charm to this seaside community.
If golf is your sport, Palm Coast is the perfect destination. Palm Coast is home to one of the best golf resorts in the country, Palm Coast Golf Resort. The facility is located in a scenic wooded area and has five courses designed such renowned pros as Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player. Each of the resort’s courses has its own style and its own difficulties. Golfers may also wish to try out the challenging six-hole course along the Atlantic at Ocean Hammock Golf Club. In addition to golf, the resort and surrounding area provide a variety of fine dining choices nearby. Golf is important in Palm Coast, but it’s not the only sport to enjoy. Other popular Palm Coast activities include water sports, hiking, walking, tennis or beach-going. Flagler County has 19 miles of relatively quiet white sand beaches. Boating, surfing, jet-skiing, water skiing and fishing are also popular. Several businesses along the coast provide rental equipment for visitors. For tennis players, the Player’s Racquet Club in Palm Coast has 18 courts, including clay, hard and grass surfaces. The club also hosts several USTA national events each year.
Nearby sites to see include Marineland, Holden House Museum, Florida Agricultural Museum and the Flagler Beach Historical Museum. Marineland is primarily a research center, but does offer dolphin shows and aquarium and tropical reef displays. Holden House Museum and Flagler Beach Historical Museum provide glimpses into the history of the Flagler County lifestyle. The agricultural museum is an outdoor educational park, offering tribute to Florida’s diverse heritage. It’s only a 25 minute drive to the charming parks, fine dining and shopping of the nation’s oldest city, St. Augustine. As an alternative to sightseeing and enjoying the outdoors, one can drive 30 minutes into Daytona Beach, a popular tourist destination south of Palm Coast. Daytona Beach is known for its beaches, shopping, dining and nightlife, and provides an exciting getaway for Palm Coast residents.
